Trouble with Toys!

Trouble with toys! Yep! I’m in trouble again, Miss Penny speaking. I have a lot of toys, some weird ones, like a furry dog that’s bigger than me, I can’t get my mouth around it. I don’t always get how the two legged think? You all know my favourite toy is Pink Baby but socks are a very close second, then comes Mouse-with-a-tail, that’s particularly good for shaking, so is Lanky Monkey, he’s a lot of fun as arms and legs flap around my head. Bedtime is playtime, Susan is too busy writing during the day, Lavender Cottage Book #4 is way past the halfway mark. Did you know there are four dogs in this series, Buddy Boy is a laid back Bichon Frise and Arthur, he’s more my style a wiry terrier and two Golden Retrievers. Ah, where was I? Playtime, first we play socks. I always win. Pink Baby is fun too, she squeaks but Susan tease me and hides her under the covers and that makes me mad. So you’re wondering about the trouble part. Well, it’s like this, I like my toys in bed with me and I let Susan share my night-time bed, its quite big enough for the two of us and my toys. Here’s the problem, Mouse-with-the-tail and Pink Baby squeak, its an interesting sound but it must hurt Susan’s delicate ears. Have you noticed how small human ears are? Anyway, last night Pink Baby got between us and…can you guess what happened?  Yep, she squeaked very loudly and woke us up and then Mouse-with-the-tail got wrapped around me and made a heck of a squeak. Susan sat bolt upright and grabbed the toys and threw them, I kid you not, she threw them on the floor. I am greatly disturbed and stare at my favourite toys lying motionless on the floor. Then, she gets mad with me and tells me to go to sleep. I don’t like being in trouble so I pretended to sleep. I’m miffed, so I’m not talking about books today, you’ll have to read Susan’s News tomorrow, Click this link to subscribe or this one for last weeks Importance of Setting the Scene Click here.

Dog Tired!

Dog tired, exhausted that’s me, Miss Penny speaking. I’ve slept for two days and I may have been traumatized for life. Thursday morning I was so excited, we were going out. My excitement soon dampened when we got to the car. I hate the car. I’m shoved on the back seat and I want to sit on Susan’s knee. I don’t like it,

I hate the car and I need a hair cut.

so I whine, then Susan gets mad. We arrive and park; someone yells through a fog horn and Susan disappears. I kid you not she leaves me alone in the car. Susan went to get her Covid needle now I’m sorry for her because I remember needles at the vet. Perhaps we can have visitors again, Susan shakes her head not yet. Okay, so now for home. Urr…, just a minute we are going in the wrong direction and suddenly I’m outside Pet Agree. Oh no the groomers! And, you guessed it, she leaves me again. Okay the story is not over, I was truly

Very smart

abandoned, because when I’m all coiffed and looking pretty good, if naked is good, Rose comes to fetch me. This is very disconcerting, where the heck is Susan. No matter, I’ll worry about that later,  just get me out of here. Joni, the groomer is real nice but I’m not too keen on the bath and clippers. Rose’s house will do for now. I run upstairs, I love running upstairs, we don’t have stairs in the apartment, no she’s not there, I run down search the living room but I can’t find her. This is it, I’m a poor abandoned orphan. Susan will pay for this, but for now I’ll cuddle up with Rose. Susan eventually arrives and then another car ride, I hate the car, but finally we are home. What a day, let me sleep. If Susan thinks I’m promoting her writing today she can think again, she doesn’t deserve an assistant. I shall sulk.

From Susan, I am sorry you had such a bad day Miss Penny. But not much to say about writing today. Heart of Sophie’s War is at the editors and covers are in progress, no decisions yet. But we do have a potential new cover for The Blue Pendant. Scroll down to see.

Popsicle Penny!

Popsicle Penny, that is me this cold wintery day. Miss Penny speaking, I hate the cold, which is a problem because winters are cold here in Ottawa. Susan

Me and the boss ready for -25 wind chill

dresses me up like a pink popsicle, a pink doggie coat with a furry lining and pink bootees to match but I’m still cold. I try running back into the apartment, before we get to the elevator, that doesn’t work. Susan scoops up in her arms and even though I am already shivering she unceremoniously dumps me on the icy, snowy driveway and expects me to walk. First, I sniff the air and if it is not windy I take a stroll, I’ll even trot if it’s sunny unless my paws sting with the salt. Psst! Don’t tell Susan but if the snow is fresh and not too cold, it’s fun being outside. I can burying my nose and smell the squirrels, run and jump. I wish we had a backyard. However, here comes the popsicle part, the howling arctic wind is

I am NOT moving!

brutal. I am not moving. I might freeze into a popsicle or get blown over. Nope! I am not moving and I’m definitely not squatting my butt. Susan can pull with all

Are you nuts? -25c I’m going home.

her might, the only direction I’m going is home. Yep, I win and we go home. Oh here’s the evil eye, time to talk writing. The plot issues of the last couple of weeks are solved and Susan is hammering away on the keyboard as she starts pulling all the threads together and prepares to enter the conclusion phase of  Heart of Sophie’s War. All kinds of trickery is afoot as someone tries to disrupt the unity of the camp hospital. Is romance in the air? Sophie kisses …guess who? No spoilers but she is aroused with desire, confused and very conflicted… Bye for now…

My Furry Mom & Our Story

My furry mom and our story, Miss Penny speaking. Lila is my real furry mom, she lives with Susan’s friend Kathleen, my two legged mom. Because of this Covid

Me and My Mom

thing, we never have visitors, so it was a treat to see my mom.  Did I ever tell you my story? My mom was rescued from a despicable puppy farm when I was in her tummy with six other little pups. Kathleen, adopted my mom and I was born, they called me the runt of the litter. I can’t say I like that term, it sounds as though I’m some sort of delinquent. Apparently I was a surprise, six puppies born and then much later I popped out. You see, right from the beginning I was special, making a grand entrance, that just proves I was born a princess. I don’t

Looking for squirrels but see how trim I am?

even look like my brothers and sisters, although we are Shih Tzu’s, I am small and skinny with long legs, my siblings are chubby with short legs. The vet called me a throw-back. A throw-back!? I’m so insulted, what is that supposed to mean? First I’m called a runt now a throw-back. Does this deserve a rebuttal, like chewing a shoe or ripping a Kleenex into shreds? Perhaps not. I liked Susan from the moment I saw her at only eight weeks old. She said she’d never have another dog after she lost my predecessor, Buddy-Boy. It took me all of two seconds to change her mind and here I am three years later, snug and warm and not just a pet but an author’s assistant. Speaking of which, before I get the evil eye, a report on Susan’s writing. Well, she has been cranky this week, a big issue with her new

Work in progress

book Heart fo Sophie’s War, one important character had difficulty getting into the story and it required a lot of work and a re-write to correct the issue. She’s also playing with book cover design again, but the last I heard she was going back to the originals. I like the new ones, but what do I know? Stay safe everyone!

A Heebie-Jeebie Week!

A heebie-jeebie week, Miss Penny speaking, I made that up but it’s appropriate.

Heebie-jeebies!

First it was too much ignoring as Susan finished and uploaded the Box Set of the Lavender Cottage Books. Then, (this is the worst part) Susan starts flitting about and I’m shoved in the office with the door closed, more time than I can count. Laundry day, our laundry is downstairs,  Susan keeps disappearing, she says, she’ll be back but how do I know? Forsaken for a load of washing? Me, the princess! Then, she’s busy wrapping things, not paying attention and off we go in the car. I hate the car and it’s my walk time. But wait for it, there’s more, she leaves me in the car and goes to the Post Office, something about parcels to England. I can’t see her, the store swallows her up and I’m trapped in the car, the heebie-jeebies are making my heart thump. Phew she’s back and we go home. I get a very short walk and I’m suitably miffed. Yep, it’s not over yet. Both phones are jangling, multiple times, and each time I’m shoved in the office and she disappears with books in her hand. What’s going on? I’m a nervous wreck, never to recover. So much isolation (no not the Covid kind) and desertion is traumatic. I use my sad face and get cuddles as she explains that OIW (Ottawa Independent Writers) has published an anthology Short Stories for a LongYear, neat title, because of Covid people are picking up their books from here. Well, the princess is not impressed. I am sure you will agree, heebie-jeebies is an apt description. Oh here comes the evil eye, not that Susan is in my good books this week, being ignored and deserted takes its toll. I get carried away, alwaysthe princess, I’m almost oaky so here’s an update.

Dogs and Masks!

Thank goodness I don’t have to wear a mask, Miss Penny speaking, wearing a coat in cold weather is bad enough. Canines are lucky they can’t catch this Covid

thing. In case you don’t know, a canine is a dog, I’m just showing off. But, this Covid thing loves people so everyone must wear a mask to stay safe and stop it spreading and making people very, very sick. Do you know how disconcerting it is not see your face? It might just provoke a growl or a bark, especially if you’re a

stranger, but then it’s best to bark at a stranger anyway. I don’t bark often but if Susan needs protecting I will give a woof maybe two if its really threatening. Have no fear, mask or no mask, my trusty little nose recognizes you. Masks and noses are the point of this blog. Susan is researching for her latest book Heart of Sophie’s War. Even back as far as the Great War, dogs, with their amazing sense of smell sniffed out explosives on the battlefield. What you might not know is

Now that’s a creepy mask!

they wore masks to protect them, not from the Covid thing, but from gas poisoning. Yikes! They did look really creepy and how the heck they could sniff through that contraption beats me. But they were very brave dogs and served and protected the soldiers, and still do in war zones today. Just like me protecting Susan, well maybe not quite the same, I do my best to woof occasionally. Seeing is Believing!

Seeing is believing, Miss Penny speaking. Sometime gifts drop my way, usually stuff I’m not supposed to have. The other day I was under Susan’s feet, a place where I frequently hang out and regularly get yelled at. Susan doesn’t look where

New plaything, sniff!

she’s going and trips over me, even steps on my paw and that smarts. But, get this, I get the blame for being in the way. Can you believe that? Anyway, Susan is sorting her vitamins and I’m wondering why I don’t get vitamins and then this little container drops in my path. I give it a sniff, it smells weird, maybe I don’t like vitamins. There was nothing inside but it was a neat shape. I grab hold of it with my teeth and gave it a good shake, then bat it around with my paw. Spoil sport, Susan takes it away, said it wasn’t safe. I can’t figure that out? Maybe it had something to do with not seeing too well. Did I tell you she broke her glasses? That was my fault too.

Not going to mend those!

Coming back from our walk she dropped my leash, glanced down to find it and step on it so I wouldn’t run away, as if….? Her glasses were perched on top of her mask, those funny things everyone wears these days, they fell off and guess what she stamped on? Yep, her glasses and believe it or not I got the blame. Susan says I’m being dramatic, perhaps! I’ll let you decide. Oh, here comes the evil eye, except there is little writing to report this week. But she has redesigned the covers for the Lavender Cottage Novels and they are spectacular. But for the rest of the week Susan has been embroiled in one of Bryan Cohen’s, Best Page Forward, Amazon ad Challenges. Psst! Between no writing, honestly not one word, and Amazon messing up the formatting on one of her books she is very cranky. Cranky means more cuddles for me, so its not all bad. Next week will be better Heart of Sophie’s War will be back. A Doggie Senses Dictionary!

A doggie senses dictionary, Miss Penny Speaking. Magic powers, that’s what doggie senses are. I can smell and hear a thousand times better than Susan, hum… maybe not a thousand but a lot. Just this morning I’m curled up in bed waiting for Susan to make the coffee, morning coffee time is cuddle time, when I hear the rustle of a garbage bag. I leap out of bed (such a shock to my system) because garbage bag rustle means

I can sense everything!

Susan is heading to the garbage shoot and if I’m fast; I get to run down the hall. I used to follow Susan, but now I’m lazy and wait for the signs. Footsteps on the step into the living room means either she’s going to the balcony or just to relax in her chair. When she goes the other way towards the bathroom I can stay put unless I hear the drawer on the bathroom vanity, then I panic because she’s putting makeup on and you know what that means? She’s going out. The phone is a bit complicated, there’s one ring that means someone is at the door, ‘Come on up!’ means we have visitors. Now, I have to admit that there are a couple of things that have me very confused. We don’t get many visitors because this corona thing is still going on but sometimes people I know appear in the laptop, but I can’t detect any scent, which throws me off a bit. I hear voices. A few days ago, I was snoozing and I heard Rose’s voice, but she’s nowhere to be seen. Susan picked me up and there she was, in a little box on the screen with other people I don’t know. The next day, I was having a cuddle on Susan’s knee and Nancy’s voice boomed from the laptop and there she was in a little box. There is some magic going on and it’s not just my doggie dictionary.  Oh, here’s the evil eye I’m supposed to tell you what Susan’s been up to. The writing is coming along, Heart of Sophie’s War is up to 10,000 words, Sophie is already in trouble and in danger of being sent home because she was being kind to a shell shocked soldier. Sister Drew is a nasty piece of work. Hee, hee, that’s got you wondering. Good news, at the rate Susan is writing you might be reading this by January.

May I suggest you read Prelude to Sophie’s War while you wait for the sequel – London 1915, German Zeppelin attacks are not the only thing Sophie battles at Bartley Hospital. Will her courage be enough to keep her sane and alive?

Afflictions, Puppies & Anxiety

Separation anxiety is an affliction dogs get when left alone, Miss PennySpeaking. I am afflicted. Susan has left me a few times recently.  At least

Pl-e-a-s-e come home soon!

this corona thing kept her at home, but now she’s venturing out. She went to Anna at PurEnvi Spa to get a pedi, whatever that it is, something to do with feet. Perhaps, because she only has two they get worn out. Then the next day she went to deliver books to Coles Bookstore. I don’t know why I can’t come with her, but then I don’t like the car either. Yep, I’m a puppy princess. Speaking of which, I hear rumours about a new puppy. What! Susan wouldn’t dare, would she? So, I’m abandoned again, the cheek of it and she goes off to Frank and Glenda’s and that’s not all… get this… to visit Lily the new puppy. Phew, at least it’s not my house. Oh yes, and on her return she goes on about Lily being cute,

This is the adorable Lily!

adorable – adjectives reserved for me – remember me, the puppy princess? Mind you it’s better than the enormous dog they had before. He was friendly but big and played rough. After I flipped my nose back into joint, that’s a wild expression, my nose is perfectly fine, I’m quite excited Susan says I can play with Lily when she’s had all her shots. Shots! As in gunshots! I discovered she meant vaccinations at the vet. Um, poor Lily the vet is never a good thing.

Oops! That evil eye again. Susan is telling me to talk about writing, anyone would think she’d written a new book, to be truthful she’s been slacking off but I will concede that she’s been writing all this week. The Heart of Sophie’s War is progressing. May I suggest you read Prelude to Sophie’s War while you wait for the sequel – London 1915, German Zeppelin attacks are not the only thing Sophie battles at Bartley Hospital. Will her courage be enough to keep her sane and alive?

Knitting Attack!

Knitting Attack! Did you know that knitting is dangerous to dogs? Miss Penny speaking. My author boss, Susan, a.k.a. Mom has started knitting. She writes in the morning and I have to stay in my bed, Susan complains she can’t type when I’m on her knee. Psst! She doesn’t try that hard, she could type around me, but I do as I’m told. Evening is our time together, I curl up on Susan’s lap and she watches TV. I’m not too keen myself, sometimes I see or hear a dog but I’d rather sleep, that is until this knitting thing started. I’ll explain knitting for those of you who don’t know what it is, especially my four-legged friends. Knitting is a strange occupation that involves a ball, not the kind you chase and play with but

I’m leaving with my pink toy.

a ball of yarn and two very long pointed needles, that are terrifying. They attach to the yarn; the points move in and out and this is the really scary part, every now and again, and you never know when, these instruments of death (okay maybe that’s a bit dramatic) miss the yarn and catapult through the air like some demented missile landing onto the floor making a terrible clatter and almost stabbing my head. My heart pounds out of my chest and I jump downand run as far away as I can, and Susan laughs. Can you believe that, she laughs! So as soon as I see those needles come out I grab my favourite pink toy and go to bed. I miss mom’s lap, but it’s safe here. I’ll be glad when this knitting phase is over. ‘What’s that? Writing?’ Oh, yes Susan is still writing and researching Heart of Sophie’s War, she wrote an entire chapter this week and researched what they ate at the hospital camp. It surprised me how well they ate; bacon, fresh bread, sometimes eggs (they kept their own chickens) mutton, beef, sometimes trapped rabbits, vegetables and they had puddings; rice pudding and suet pudding, biscuits and tea, lots of tea. That’s all folks for today. Warning watch out for knitting needles!
