Knitting Attack! Did you know that knitting is dangerous to dogs? Miss Penny speaking. My author boss, Susan, a.k.a. Mom has started knitting. She writes in the morning and I have to stay in my bed, Susan complains she can’t type when I’m on her knee. Psst! She doesn’t try that hard, she could type around me, but I do as I’m told. Evening is our time together, I curl up on Susan’s lap and she watches TV. I’m not too keen myself, sometimes I see or hear a dog but I’d rather sleep, that is until this knitting thing started. I’ll explain knitting for those of you who don’t know what it is, especially my four-legged friends. Knitting is a strange occupation that involves a ball, not the kind you chase and play with but

a ball of yarn and two very long pointed needles, that are terrifying. They attach to the yarn; the points move in and out and this is the really scary part, every now and again, and you never know when, these instruments of death (okay maybe that’s a bit dramatic) miss the yarn and catapult through the air like some demented missile landing onto the floor making a terrible clatter and almost stabbing my head. My heart pounds out of my chest and I jump downand run as far away as I can, and Susan laughs. Can you believe that, she laughs! So as soon as I see those needles come out I grab my favourite pink toy and go to bed. I miss mom’s lap, but it’s safe here. I’ll be glad when this knitting phase is over. ‘What’s that? Writing?’ Oh, yes Susan is still writing and researching Heart of Sophie’s War, she wrote an entire chapter this week and researched what they ate at the hospital camp. It surprised me how well they ate; bacon, fresh bread, sometimes eggs (they kept their own chickens) mutton, beef, sometimes trapped rabbits, vegetables and they had puddings; rice pudding and suet pudding, biscuits and tea, lots of tea. That’s all folks for today. Warning watch out for knitting needles!
