A Prickly Bed!

Can you imagine a prickly bed? Miss Penny speaking. Well, I have a prickly bed. Picture this, Susan is writing which means I’m being ignored, so I curl up in

What’s wrong with my bed?

my little bed. I have three beds if you count Susan’s big bed, that’s the best one, but I can’t get up on my own so I make do with the little one in the office and a bigger one in the living room— I know, spoilt princess. Anyway back to prickly bed. We had just returned from a walk, it was an especially good walk through

Britannia Park walk

Britannia Park, lots of amazing scents and sniffs. I could tell my friend Mitch had just been by and the squirrel scent was very strong so I sniffed into the bushes—one of these days I’ll catch one—sadly not today. As we walk home I get an itchy sensation in my fur and then my paw hurts, I sit down and chew my paw and

In my paw and in my bed!

that seems better and when we get home Susan continues writing and I return to bed for a nap when it attacks me. I leap out, licking and chewing my feet and legs. Susan rescues me and discovers I am covered in burrs. Out come the scissors and it smarts a bit but eventually all the burrs are gone. I really need a rest after all that trauma, so I curl up to resume my nap but guess where those burrs are now? Right, in my bed, I gave a yelp and jumped out pretty quickly. Susan washed it, but now it smells clean and I don’t trust it. I sleep on the cold floor waiting for Susan to feel sorry for me, which she does and picks me up for a cuddle. Oops here comes the evil eye, time to talk about writing, believe it or not this blog started as ‘life with an author’. Heart of Sophie’s War A novel of the Great War, is up to 14,000 words. Sister Drew who is nasty piece of work gets Sophie in terrible trouble. Sophie discovers some secrets, (one she may not want) she saves Jo an ambulance driver and gets to know Emily better. So far the hospital conditions are okay, the accommodation is primitive but livable. However, the rain is starting and the mud is squelching and German attacks are closer.

May I suggest you read Prelude to Sophie’s War while you wait for the sequel – London 1915, German Zeppelin attacks are not the only thing Sophie battles at Bartley Hospital. Will her courage be enough to keep her sane and alive?

A Doggie Senses Dictionary!

A doggie senses dictionary, Miss Penny Speaking. Magic powers, that’s what doggie senses are. I can smell and hear a thousand times better than Susan, hum… maybe not a thousand but a lot. Just this morning I’m curled up in bed waiting for Susan to make the coffee, morning coffee time is cuddle time, when I hear the rustle of a garbage bag. I leap out of bed (such a shock to my system) because garbage bag rustle means

I can sense everything!

Susan is heading to the garbage shoot and if I’m fast; I get to run down the hall. I used to follow Susan, but now I’m lazy and wait for the signs. Footsteps on the step into the living room means either she’s going to the balcony or just to relax in her chair. When she goes the other way towards the bathroom I can stay put unless I hear the drawer on the bathroom vanity, then I panic because she’s putting makeup on and you know what that means? She’s going out. The phone is a bit complicated, there’s one ring that means someone is at the door, ‘Come on up!’ means we have visitors. Now, I have to admit that there are a couple of things that have me very confused. We don’t get many visitors because this corona thing is still going on but sometimes people I know appear in the laptop, but I can’t detect any scent, which throws me off a bit. I hear voices. A few days ago, I was snoozing and I heard Rose’s voice, but she’s nowhere to be seen. Susan picked me up and there she was, in a little box on the screen with other people I don’t know. The next day, I was having a cuddle on Susan’s knee and Nancy’s voice boomed from the laptop and there she was in a little box. There is some magic going on and it’s not just my doggie dictionary.  Oh, here’s the evil eye I’m supposed to tell you what Susan’s been up to. The writing is coming along, Heart of Sophie’s War is up to 10,000 words, Sophie is already in trouble and in danger of being sent home because she was being kind to a shell shocked soldier. Sister Drew is a nasty piece of work. Hee, hee, that’s got you wondering. Good news, at the rate Susan is writing you might be reading this by January.

May I suggest you read Prelude to Sophie’s War while you wait for the sequel – London 1915, German Zeppelin attacks are not the only thing Sophie battles at Bartley Hospital. Will her courage be enough to keep her sane and alive?

Afflictions, Puppies & Anxiety

Separation anxiety is an affliction dogs get when left alone, Miss PennySpeaking. I am afflicted. Susan has left me a few times recently.  At least

Pl-e-a-s-e come home soon!

this corona thing kept her at home, but now she’s venturing out. She went to Anna at PurEnvi Spa to get a pedi, whatever that it is, something to do with feet. Perhaps, because she only has two they get worn out. Then the next day she went to deliver books to Coles Bookstore. I don’t know why I can’t come with her, but then I don’t like the car either. Yep, I’m a puppy princess. Speaking of which, I hear rumours about a new puppy. What! Susan wouldn’t dare, would she? So, I’m abandoned again, the cheek of it and she goes off to Frank and Glenda’s and that’s not all… get this… to visit Lily the new puppy. Phew, at least it’s not my house. Oh yes, and on her return she goes on about Lily being cute,

This is the adorable Lily!

adorable – adjectives reserved for me – remember me, the puppy princess? Mind you it’s better than the enormous dog they had before. He was friendly but big and played rough. After I flipped my nose back into joint, that’s a wild expression, my nose is perfectly fine, I’m quite excited Susan says I can play with Lily when she’s had all her shots. Shots! As in gunshots! I discovered she meant vaccinations at the vet. Um, poor Lily the vet is never a good thing.

Oops! That evil eye again. Susan is telling me to talk about writing, anyone would think she’d written a new book, to be truthful she’s been slacking off but I will concede that she’s been writing all this week. The Heart of Sophie’s War is progressing. May I suggest you read Prelude to Sophie’s War while you wait for the sequel – London 1915, German Zeppelin attacks are not the only thing Sophie battles at Bartley Hospital. Friends in the Park Covid Style!

Friends in the park, covid style, Miss Penny speaking. Well, what an adventure I had today. Although I was miffed at first, my walk was very short this morning and I thought Susan was going out and I hate being left alone, I have separation

anxiety, but just as I was about to hide and play dead, that’s when I go all floppy and Susan can’t pick me up, ha.ha, Susan put on my leash and I’m excited but not that much as this could mean the car and I hate the car, I know I’m a princess. Except we went out the front door, psst! Don’t tell anyone, some folks in our condo building, get their knickers in a knot if dogs go through the front door, it’s kind of weird as Susan carries me. Anyway I digress, we wait by the front door and Rita pulls up in her car and we get in and I can sit on Susan’s lap, now I don’t mind this car. I don’t understand why I can’t sit on Susan’s lap when she’s driving; she says it’s

dangerous and I’m shoved in the back so a whine, very loudly. So, today I’m comfy as Rita drives us to Andrew Haydon Park where we meet more ladies, social distancing and masks at the ready and they talked, and I mean talk… a lot, and laugh very loudly. I preened with the compliments of how cute and adorable I am, which I know but I like to hear it. Then I watched the chipmunks and

squirrels, who always seem to be just out of my reach. There was one bossy Canada goose that honked too much but Canada geese are wimps, they are afraid of me and run, well sort of waddle when they see me coming and often take flight. Can you believe it, little me, an 81/2 lb Shih Tzu, can scare off those big honking birds. Oops! Just a minute, the evil eye. I’m being interrupted by the

The Heart of Sophie’s War is progressing, although the research into WW1, particularly the field hospitals, is slowing it down. She’s doing a heck of a lot of reading. Susan tells me that she was surprised to discover that despite the injuries, death and inhuman conditions, most of the patients and medical staff were very cheerful. Interesting!

Did you miss me?

Did you miss me? Miss Penny speaking, you may have noticed I was absent last Saturday, I was miffed there was no blog. But Susan had a bit of a melt-down,

Susan’s melt down

true… she almost lost it. Our neighbour above us, we live in a high-rise condo, has been throwing buckets of water and piles of soil off their balcony. The reason you won’t believe this… they have a big dog and they do not take him for walks.

On Susan’s knee calming her down.

Need I say more! After complaints from various neighbours, the condo management ordered them to clean up the mess, which they did all over us. Susan was busy writing and I was snoozing in my bed when we heard this loud, vigorous scrapping coming from above and then a deluge of ‘soil’ fell onto our balcony. So, with good reason, Susan lost it. However, the management

Scrubbing

responded quickly and Sue, our wonderful condo cleaning lady, came up and swept everything up and scrubbed the balcony with industrial cleaner and disinfectant, which Susan thought smelt pretty good. Psst! I hate to say it but I preferred the other

No walks is criminal. I like my walks

smell, but then I’m a dog, sort of. Everything turned out well and the neighbours are behaving. I am so sad for that poor dog, I cannot image not going for walks, and meeting my friends, today I met a big black and white dog and then a small dog, even smaller than me. It would be nice if we could play together. Susan is giving me the what-about-writing look. The first chapter of The Heart of Sophie’s War is coming along, and lots of research about WW1. Did you know that it wasn’t just the terrible injuries that killed the soldiers but most often infection from the soil? The soldiers tramped on, lived on, and fought on mostly farmland soaked with manure and that caused the infections, a silent killer. Even I cringe at that thought.

Nine Stories High!

Nine stories high, we are on the balcony, Miss Penny speaking. That’s where Susan, my author boss, has her morning coffee while I survey the land below. I don’t drink coffee because I’m a dog… sort of. The view across the Ottawa River is

Ottawa River View

amazing. At first it’s scary, floating above tiny people and cars, it is a very, very long way down. Um, I bet it would be like flying… wheee, all the way to the… um, maybe not. I just had a vision of the SPLAT on the driveway. It is a bit

disconcerting when I spot squirrels scurrying along the wall. I get excited and I want to run after them then I remember the splat and think perhaps not. If it is very early in the morning, I hear a swooshing sound and suddenly it rains from the ground. Honestly, I’m not kidding. The rain comes up from the grass, not down from the sky. It’s not called a rain shower, although it definitely looks like one. Susan calls it a sprinkler. Does that mean a sprinkle of rain? I don’t

understand humans; they do weird things. When Susan works on the balcony, she puts my bed at her feet and I can snooze and gaze while she writes. I like that. Susan’s a bit testy at the moment, the book she was advertising isn’t doing too well, but her mood improves as she starts the new book. She is researching the human battles of The Great War, a bit gruesome for my taste, but there are romantic parts. I’m guessing the love triangle will be intriguing. Psst! Spoiler alert! Who does Sophie fall in love with? Will it be Carlos or Dr. Cuthbert? Now I’ve got you thinking. Time to sign off, Susan sends her best and Miss Penny sends love. P.S. This book doesn’t like to be advertised, perhaps it’s waiting for its mate. Psst! Buy it or borrow it now and be ready for book 2. Ignore Boredom?!

I’m suffering from ‘ignore boredom’, Miss Penny Speaking. It is, perhaps, not a proper saying, as my author boss, Susan, pointed out to me, but it’s all her fault. Susan is busy planing her new book and doing that Amazon ad thing again. This time she’s promoting Prelude to Sophie’s War one of my favourites, I like Sophie, she’s spunky and brave when the Germans are dropping bombs on London (WW1). But she’s annoying because she won’t admit she loves this handsome Italian guy. What’s that? Can I read? No, not yet; but I’m

Deleted! It wasn’t me!

smart so it’s only a matter of time. Susan reads all her work out loud; so I hear it all Psst! Sometimes too much, if you know what I mean!! However, when she’s in the planning stage like now, there’s no reading so I’m bored. I sleep a lot, curled up cozy in my bed, I prefer Susan’s lap but it makes it difficult to type, that’s another activity I need to learn, but when I rest my head on the key board, weird things happen on the screen. Um, perhaps not, because that’s the only time

Don’t you dare bury this again?

Susan yells at me. It’s time to sulk and ignore Susan and find my toys. Bouncing my ball makes her laugh but I have to wait until the work is done before playtime. Baby, the pink toy, is my favourite, except Susan buries it and I have to find it. After I give it a good shake I hold it tight so she doesn’t hide it again.  Well, I think that’s all for today …Oh, Susan says both ebook and paperback Prelude to Sophie’s War are available on Amazon and she’s hoping the sequel will be

out at the end of the year. Um…I think that might be a bit ambitious but what do I know I’m just a dog, sort of. Stay safe everyone, this corona thing is still around so be careful. Love Penny 🐾 and Susan 👩🏻‍🦳

Hot & Wet!

Scorching hot, Miss Penny speaking, I could say that about my boss, author Susan. She is writing again. The creative gene kicked in; a new historical novel is on the way Sophie in the Heart of War. Yeah! It might have something to do with her new short hair and fabulous colour, freeing up her brain. What do I know I’m just a dog? Back to scorching hot and complaining. With good reason it topped 43c yesterday. I’m glad they groomed me last week, or I’d be like this dog under the fan. Actually, I don’t like the fan much; it makes my fur tickle. I sit on Susan’s lap, but then I get hot, so I jumped down to spread out on the floor. I had no idea my body was so long. I lie down and squish my tummy to the cold floor, spread my back legs out flat and my front legs as far as they will go and rest my head in between front

legs, not back, hee-hee, that would be a bit hard—and relax. It works I’m as cool as a cucumber; I suggested Susan should try it. Um! Perhaps not, I just had an image… no, never mind! Anyway, guess what happened this morning? We went for a walk and it was raining and we got wet. I’m not sure which is worse, the heat or the rain.

The boss is giving me the evil eye, I’m supposed to give you some author news. As mentioned Prelude to Sophie’s War has a sequel in the making Sophie in the Heart of War – A griping WW1 story of the heartache, love and redemption. The rest of the week will be quiet for me as she is working on Bryan Cohen’s Amazon Ad Challenge.  All for now. Love from Susan 👩🏻‍🦳 and Miss Penny🐾.

When Love Ends Romance Begins

Well, it is also the prequel to Prelude to Sophie’s War, young Sophie in Ruins in Silk has grown up, left The Sackville Hotel and her story continues in London as she trains to be a nurse.

Save Some for Me – A single mother’s memoir

Could you survive an abusive man and raise five children alone?

This was a brave, insightful, revealing, and well written book of what must be one of the hardest experiences any person can go through. The courage and grace with which you tell this story is a truly affective reading experience…….  Judge’s commentary: Writer’s Digest

Drama and Trauma!

Shaggy Me, Before grooming!

Phew! What a traumatic day, Miss Penny speaking! Susan ran off and left me shut in the office, said she had to see Dan about her summer tires. A bit late I thought, but what do I know I’m just a dog. When she returned, I was bundled in the car, I hate the car almost as much as I hate being alone, except we went to Rose and Pierre’s and who was in the driveway but Cosmo, he’s the cutest dog, just my size. Then, I’m on my leash again, I’m all excited we’re going for a walk, except we stopped outside Pet Agree and you know what happens there. And then …I couldn’t believe it … Susan threw me, literally threw me,

Trim after grooming

into the arms of Tracy and walked away. Didn’t say good-bye, nothing; something to do with this corona thing. I felt very abandoned. But, I do like Joni, the groomer, I just wish she wouldn’t put me in the bathtub and use those clippers. When Susan finally picked me up I was embarrassingly naked except for my head. Psst! It did feel good to be rid of those knots, they do sting. However, my embarrassment didn’t finish there. During our walk this morning we met a very handsome Lhasa-aspos he had the most beautiful long fluffy white coat. We sniffed each other and made friends. Then I remembered

Pretty face, fluffy tail and naked!

was naked, I blushed to tips of my toes. Okay well, I know I can’t blush, but it felt like my shorn-skin-showing grey-black coat was bright red. Susan is giving me the ‘really’ look. A bit dramatic, maybe? Time to talk about the boss, I am an author assistant after all.

Not much writing going on these days, Susan says she’s thinking and planning a new novel. Hum…not sure about that, this corona thing has interfered with her creative writing gene, it’s just temporary, I hear rumblings of a new historical fiction. However, in the meantime, with Rose’s genius for photoshop, the new covers for The Sackville Hotel Trilogy are finished. E-covers first, paperback coming shortly. That’s it for now maybe the thinking and planning will turn into words this week. Who knows?

Stuck on Me!

My foot is right by the red dot.

I was literally, Stuck on Me, Miss Penny speaking. As you know I’m waiting to get a haircut. Susan trims the knots, but misses a few and I sometimes get my nails caught. This morning was the worst. I’m a happy little dog, you can tell by my high-speed tail. We’ve just come back from a walk and I’m waiting for my breakfast. I have an itch, so I lift my back leg and have a good old scratch, right behind my ear. Awh! That was good and then panic, I can’t move. My back foot is stuck in my ear, I can smell the chicken for breakfast, I’m hungry. Susan looks at me and tells me to eat my breakfast—I can be a bit picky, but I like chicken. I can’t move, she ignores me. Help! Can’t she see? I’m stuck! Am I going to die? She frowns and asks me what’s wrong. Psst! One of these days I’ll give her a shock and answer, like Pluto on YouTube. In the meantime, my foot is still in my ear, picture it, my back foot—a contortionist I am

Phew a close one!

not. Finally, Mum realizes I’m stuck, Yep, no confusion Mum for the lovie stuff and Susan for the author business. This is an abuse of the lovie stuff. Mum rescue me? Oh no, it’s a horror movie, the scissors approach like monster jaws snapping open and closed. My ear! Please don’t cut my ear off! My foot won’t budge. Mum had to slide her fingers under my foot, into my neck and ear. I held my breath, two swift clips and I’m free. Phew! That was a scary morning, but the chicken was good and I got an extra Milkbone. What! A tad dramatic, you say. I’d like to see Mum put her foot in her ear. Maybe not! 🥺

Author news is once again limited, the new Katie story is coming along, but not much else. Psst! I think it’s time Susan got back to serious writing. But the books on Amazon Kindle are doing well, although the new covers are not finished yet. Susan says If you enjoyed reading The Blue Pendant  Book 1 you will love books 2 and 3. On special with Amazon Anne’s Legacy and coming up Sarah’s Choice. Take care everyone.

Book 2 Anna’s Legacy and Book 3 Sarah’s Choice  Anna’s saga continues with daughter Isabelle and granddaughter Sarah in these two books. Amazon special

She longed for freedom. But life seemed set against her. Will her courage be enough to survive and find ultimate joy?
