Hair or Fur, Coloured or Not?

Hair or fur, coloured or not, that is the question, Miss Penny speaking. My boss, the author, is normally a quiet unassuming introvert, quite the opposite to me, I like to be the centre of attention, Princess Penny—just a reminder. But not Susan, except when it comes to her hair. Susan has pearly-white hair. Psst! She’s old. Oops! I need to be careful that look was beyond the evil eye, even menacing. Gosh, where was I? Ah, Susan’s hair. You will never believe this but she came home the other day with … wait for it … blue, pink and purple hair down one side. I kid you not, not such a quiet introvert after all. But, when someone suggested Susan dye my hair, which by the way is fur not hair, to match hers I freaked out. YIKES! No coloured fur for me. Then I noticed all was not well,

No coloured fur for me!

Susan’s not keen on the pink, I don’t know why, if I was to have a colour, pink would be my choice. Pink Princess Penny, that has a nice ring to it, but coloured fur is definitely not my style. Two days later she comes home with a lot of blue a bit of purple and no pink. Guess what? She said she made a mistake because the new look included new purple glasses but with all the blue they don’t match. I will never understand the two legged logic. Mind you right now I don’t think Susan understands either but thankfully she’s still writing. Lavender Cottage Book Four is now at the halfway mark. Playing Sock!

Playing sock is my favourite game, Miss Penny speaking, well almost, chasing squirrels is my most favourite but Susan won’t let squirrels in the apartment.Umm…I wonder why? Anyway back to socks, I hope I’m not boring you. In the past we’ve talked about me pulling socks of Susan’s feet, this is different. No! I don’t have a foot fetish, well maybe a sock fetish. Psst! I do love

Playing Sock!

socks, in or out of feet. We play sock at night when we go to bed. Susan teases me, her fingers creep slowly towards the sock and I wait, wait, wait, I’m concentrating very hard with one eye on Susan and one eye on the sock… here it comes, slowly, take it easy I must leap before Susan grabs the sock, her fingers are getting closer, steady, the timing is critical. I pounce on it, I’ve got it I pull, Susan pulls and the battle has begun. The sock is stretchy, I almost fall off the bed; wouldn’t that be embarrassing. I’m still pulling and yank it right out of

I almost fell off the bed!

Susan’s hand. Now, I shake the heck out of it. Hee-hee! I’d like to see Susan do that, her head would drop off. Um… no, that wouldn’t be good. Sometimes she makes a puppet and that really gets me going, as it turns into a thing and I leap on it, yesterday I almost grabbed Susan’s fingers, phew that was a close one. Oh, here comes the evil eye, reminding me I’m supposed to be talking about writing. I have to say Susan has been exceptionally cranky, slamming-door cranky, I might be exaggerating just a tad, poor Susan was upset. I gave her lots of licks. The Sophie’s War covers are the problem. The first book is done and looks great. Prelude to Sophie’s War – 2nd edition  – London 1915 Sophie starts her nursing career, nursing bombed out mother’s and children as well as soldiers. German Zeppelin attacks are not the only thing Sophie battles at Bartley Hospital. Will her courage be enough to keep her sane and alive?

But, book two not so good. Plus someone ripped the design apart. Psst! I hate to say it but rightly so, it was terrible. However, finally great news; we have success. A totally different design for the Heart of Sophie’s War and it looks great. Sophie achieves her goal of nursing soldiers in the Great War, the horrors are more than she bargained for on the Western Front.

Then just like magic, the cover for book three, not yet written, just happened.

Who’s the guy?

We have  a mock-up of In the Wake of Sophie’s War scheduled for late 2022. Now the interesting thing about this book is that you have to read books one and two before you understand the cover of book 3. Who is that guy and what is he doing?

That’s all folks, Miss Penny and Susan signing off. See release date below.

Picky Princess Penny!

Picky Princess Penny, that’s me! Miss Penny speaking. I’m just a tad picky with my food. Apparently, according to the vet I am under weight and don’t eat enough. She recommends I eat dry kibble or fancy canned dog food with lots of

No! Not for Miss Penny, The Princess

calories. Err … no, that’s for regular dogs, nudge, nudge, did you forget I’m a princess? I’m not averse to a few delicate crunchies with my meat, but absolutely no canned food, that messes up my digestion. And sometimes I don’t feel like eating. Now, that puts Susan is in a tizzy, when I don’t eat. She cooks all kinds of different chicken, usually  breast but when I didn’t eat that she tried chicken thighs, they were okay for a day or two, except she added rice, I’m not keen on rice and it’s hard to spit the rice out, she said I needed carbs, what the heck are carbs? Next I had ground beef with gravy that was quite tasty until she

I don’t want to eat veggies. When you make me chicken I might eat.

added veggies, little squares of orange carrot and green peas, imagine green peas, they were easier to spit out. What next? I smell something good, I think we’re back to plain chicken, maybe I’ll eat today, I heard rumblings of calling the vet and that would mean a car ride, I hate the car, and then I endure prodding from the vet. Okay, I’ll eat today.  No evil eye and not a word about author Susan’s

New cover coming!

writing today and I bet you’re wondering why. Well, not much to say, she is revising Prelude to Sophie’s War  for the second edition, playing with cover art but no decisions yet on Heart of Sophie’s War. Psst! She’s not the most decisive person and it took her long enough but the new cover for The Blue Pendant is finally done. Oh the big news is we’re getting a new website, newsletter and I will have my own blog… Um! Didn’t Susan promise me that sometime ago?

Yeah! we have a new cover for The Blue Pendant  Thank you everyone for your participation.

Find a Sock, Shake a Sock!

Find a sock, shake a sock, Miss Penny speaking. Socks are my favourite thing, they are stretchy, shakable and have an amazing eau de foot scent. Hee-hee, did you notice no evil eye today. I have the whole blog, well nearly. Author Susan, has sent Heart of Sophie’s War off to the editor. So, back to socks. Susan left a pile of laundry on the floor yesterday. Psst! she’s not the tidiest of people. Hum! I wonder if there are any socks in there. Usually I have to wait until bedtime then I paw at Susan’s feet urging her to get her socks off. Aha, that pile of laundry is easy prey. Keeping one eye on Susan, I nudge my nose in the laundry. Yippee, eau de foot. Careful now, Susan hasn’t noticed yet, I quietly tug on a pink one and shake the heck out of it. ‘Ah, that was good.’ Oops! Susan spotted me. She’s laughing, well, that’s an insult. Oh, she’s pulling my sock. I’m not having that so I pull harder. A battle has begun, Susan wins the first one, but I’m clever I  know socks

Don’t you dare!

come in pairs. My nose dives into the laundry again. There it is eau de foot, I get the other pink sock. Hum, not as stretchy as the black, but that’s okay, pink is nicer for a princess, I’ll shake it into submission. My turn for the evil eye to Susan ‘Don’t you dare touch my sock.’ Until next week, Easter bunny time. Oh that’s exciting!

Just one more thing, Susan is looking for beta readers for the new book. All you have to do is read the book, give Susan some feedback, just incase any of those pesky typos got through and write an honest review on Amazon, Kobo and Chapter/Indigo. If you are interested in a free pre-release e-copy of Heart of Sophie’s War please contact Susan. Your comments are important and very much appreciated. We’re still working on covers, samples of mock-ups below.

Pasty Penny?

Pasty Penny, my tummy is not feeling good, Miss Penny speaking. Susan said I looked pasty. Really! Now, I am a princess so I’m milking this for all I can but how my thick black fur is pasty is a stretch. Truthfully, I never have an appetite and

Do I look pasty? Messy in need of a hair cut maybe?

I’m picky with my food. But, I am feeling ignored. Susan is busy working on the cover and the back and front matter for Heart of Sophie’s War. So, I gobbled down my breakfast and then depositing it on the floor; this always gets her attention. I thought the book was finished but I was wrong. Things like the dedication are added and because Susan wrote this during the Covid pandemic she is dedicating it to all those frontline people, past and present, who protect us. Then there’s the acknowledgements, thanking the editor and all the people who helped.  What?!  My name is not there, but I’m Susan’s assistant. Uh, we’ll see about that. I think Princess Penny sounds pretty good. Too much? Maybe I need to look very, very pasty and play the sympathy card, or do you think the hurt card would work better? I think I have Susan’s attention now. She’s working on her

bio and a list of her published works. All this extra is called the front or back matter. I’m tired just thinking about it all. Susan is playing with cover designs and that cheers me up and I smell something tempting on the stove, perhaps I’ll eat today. Oops, here’s the evil eye. One last thing, which of these two mock ups appeal to you? More to come next week.

Shivering Cold on Western Fronts!

Shivering cold on two Western Fronts, Miss Penny speaking. I have you guessing. You see, the novel Susan finished last week is set on the Western Front 1917 and we live in the Western side of Ottawa and we’re talking about shivering. Hee-hee, get it, Western and its cold on both fronts. I thought that was clever. Okay maybe not, but I’m a dog remember? Last week we talked about the completion of Heart of Sophie’s War. During the first re-write … really! There’s more than one rewrite? Oh well, Susan knows best. I listen intently as she reads aloud, it helps her pick up weird words or muddled sentences. It’s a good job as the grammar police would have a field day and they can be brutal. As the story progresses, winter is setting in at the casualty clearing station and it’s getting cold on the Western Front, snow and freezing temperatures. I was shivering just listening. These poor nurses lived in canvas tents surrounded by frost and snow,

A cold frigid night

they worked in flimsy marquees or wooden huts for wards, heated by a wood or paraffin stove. Many of these women, especial volunteer aides (VAD) were used to wearing fur coats in not so cold England. Almost every piece of clothing they owned was worn. This quote says it all. “We all shivered into our warmest woollies, packed them tight on us like the leaves of a head of lettuce.” Quoted from A Volunteer Nurse in the Western Front by Olive Dent This book was reproduced from Olive Dent’s personal journal as a VAD in the Great War. A great historical read with accuracy and humour. First published in 1917 and republished in 2014. Well, that has taken the wind out of my sails, I maybe shivering on the cold Western front of Ottawa but I have a warm apartment to sleep in and my walks last ten minutes when it’s cold, even shorter when the wind chill is  -31c. I kid you not, Susan actually expected me to walk in that, of course I dug my heals in and she picked me up and we went home.

A Change of Plan!

A change of plan, Miss Penny speaking. First, I want this on record that I do not approve. As everyone knows, I am the centre of attention, after all I am a princess. It seems that Susan, my boss thinks that we need to revert to the original title Susan A. Jennings Author For the Love of Story the latter being the blog. Susan says, if I want to continue hosting the blog I must talk about books, writing, reading and fun stories about all her novels especially those in progress. She (notice I don’t use Susan or boss, that’s how miffed I am) has

Don’t mess with me, I’m miffed!

condescended to give me a line or two for my antics. Huh! Antics indeed! We’ll see about that. I noticed a new pair of slippers in the hall and they look particularly chewable. I could pee on the carpet, except we don’t have a carpet, so that won’t work. I could ignore her too. But that would be harder on me than you-know-who. So …. I, as the host of For the Love of Story, shall take second place and sulk. But, a message to my loyal fans, rest assured there will be consequences. Psst! I’ll make sure my stories sneak in—stay tuned.

February is Valentine month. Susan is featuring The Lavender Cottage a women’s fiction series with a love story. Individual books or the box set of three. A delightful and cozy read about love’s heartaches and joys, this series is full of warmth and happy endings.

Covers were the topic of the week specifically The Blue Pendant. Susan was considering changing the title to Anna. However, all the five star Amazon reviews  would disappear and it is incredibly difficult to accumulate reviews, so there will be a new cover but no new title

Work in progress!

Heart of Sophie’s WarBook 2 of the Sophie Series is getting very exciting. Sophie’s life is in turmoil, the worst since she arrived at Passchendaele. Sister Sin’s watchful eye is dangerous. Andrew is called away, could this mean a court martial? Who does Sophie’s heart belong to Andrew or Carlos? Only three or four chapters left. Can Sophie challenge her demons or will they destroy her? A hint, she comes face to face with her father in the flames. As for Andrew and Carlos, only time will tell. No spoilers, just teasers for now!

This was a brave, insightful, revealing, and well written book of what must be one of the hardest experiences any person can go through. The courage and grace with which you tell this story is a truly affective reading experience…….  Judge’s commentary: Writer’s Digest

Zooming Penny!

Zooming Penny! No, I’m not taking pictures, Miss Penny speaking and I’m not going anywhere.  Zoom lives in Susan’s laptop, I kid you not, people get inside this Zoom thing. It must be a bit cramped; no social distancing there and be warned nobody wears a mask in Zoom. I like to attend all Susan’s Zoom meetings. As soon as I hear a voice coming from the laptop, I’m on Susan’s lap, hee-hee, not the laptop, although that’s not a bad idea. I listen for familiar voices, from people who used to visit before this corona thing. I have to say it is very confusing for a dog, I hear my name and kind of see someone in this little square on the laptop screen, sometimes there are two or three squares and other times it is a mass of squares. My head goes form side to side, every time I hear Miss Penny, I’m trying hard to understand and would really like to sniff this person and maybe get a pat or two, but nothing happens, just a voice, so disappointing and frustrating. Susan agrees with the frustrating part, but I think that has to do with the technology. I had better get on with my job and talk about writing before I get the evil eye. Heart of Sophie’s War is into the conclusion phase. Did you

Here’s where it starts…

know that Susan carefully outlines her books with an exciting beginning that sucks you into the story and then a middle that is full of action and finally, the conclusion which is where she is now. Lots of surprises as she wraps things up. Sophie is struggling with the horror of her past and she finally admits she is in love. Who is it? The forbidden fruit or the comfortable understanding doctor? No spoilers, but they are both doctors, ha-ha!

Yummy Buffalo Chews!

Yummy buffalo chews are my favourite treat, Miss Penny speaking. Susan buys my food from the pet store and I’m allowed inside this store. At first it’s like

My favourite treat

going to Disneyland for dogs it is so exciting. The smells are heavenly, bags of food, treats and big marrow bones, wrapped in plastic. I find that weird, Susan gets my bones from the grocery store. After a few minutes I feel drunk, not that I know what that is, but I feel as though I might keel over. A stranger leans over the counter and offers me a treat. Um, I’m not sure about this. I don’t know this person, I sniff the treat, it’s not my favourite chew so I turn away. My doggie companions in the store, step back with shock  “are you nuts, refusing treats!?”  I shrug, “no, I’m just rather particular.” This is not the kind of attention I like; I’m getting nervous and start to shake. Susan picks me up, (the shaking always works). We leave the store and get into the car, as you know I hate the car, but then I get a whiff of my favourite buffalo chew. Quite revived, I can’t wait to get home for my treat. I’m settling down for a good chew when I get the evil eye. Time to talk writing. So what has the author been up to this week? I detect frustration, finally a new paperback cover design for The Blue Pendant, I think she has it right this time. The issues with Heart of Sophie’s War are resolving. Psst! Can you believe Susan left out a whole character. Yep, she did. Sister Sin short for Singleton, a nasty ward sister who accuses the nurses of being sinful, except she’s the sinner. In book one, Prelude to Sophie’s War, Sister Sin is banished to the convent and Susan planned to bring her back in book two. But nasty Sister was reluctant to make an appearance. It often happens. To say fictional characters have a life of their own is absolutely true. Susan thinks she writes the characters but its more like the characters dictate to her. However, sometimes the author has to take the lead, which was the case with Sister Sin, like it or not, has finally arrived at the casualty clearing hospital and she is ready to cause mayhem in the story. Oh boy, there is big trouble brewing for Sophie and Captain Cuthbert.

Pirouetting Penny!

Pirouetting Penny, I guess you could say I pirouetted into 2021, Miss Penny speaking wishing everyone a Happy New Year. Now, for my dance explanation and rest assured I have no intention of being a circus dog. However, in the icy, snowy weather my paws hurt from the cold and the City of Ottawa spreads salt everywhere to stop people from slipping but that salt stings in my paws and I refuse to walk, pee or pooh. Susan attempts to pull me along, it doesn’t work. I don’t move but I try lifting my paws off the ground. I can get two at a time but not all four. You might think this is where the pirouette comes in but no because I’m too cold and start shivering. I win! Susan picks me up and carries me home, she carried me from Britannia Park the other day, that was a good walk, hee-hee! I had forgotten about doggie boots until New Year’s Eve, when I was plunked on the table and my paws are squeezed into these booties and this is where I learned to pirouette. I don’t want these things on, so I shake and lift my leg as high as I can and stretch it up and out and balance on two feet, that’s the pirouette. Susan laughs, really such an insult she laughs at my predicament. I get one bootie on each paw and I’m expected to walk so I pirouette. Psst! Don’t tell Susan but these booties work, no more sore feet and I turned the pirouette into a trot. No evil eye today as we took some time off over the holiday, so no writing activity to report.
