Vet Trauma

Vet trauma, Miss Penny speaking, my boss, author Susan has instructed me to talk about her books first. This will be difficult because I am traumatized, so don’t go away, I’ll be back. Susan has been writing feverishly this week and coincidentally about veterinarians in the Great War. In Heart of Sophie’s War the camp vets treat injured horses and dogs. Nanny, a dog with injured paws has arrived at the Casualty Clearing Station. She is a special dog who not only sniffs and finds injured soldiers but stays with them, comforts them and keeps them warm until help arrives. Because of her protective nature the soldiers nicknamed her Nanny. Has anyone else noticed how often Susan has dogs in her books? The Lavender Cottage Books, a second chance at love series, has four

dogs, BuddyBoy who belongs to Katie and Arthur belonging to Piers and Katie’s best friend has two Gold Retrievers. I notice I am not in this series. Huh! I am proud to be a dog, we are very clever, including me. I protect Susan form all kinds of things, I may be small but I’m mighty!  I can’t say the same for Susan, I was grossly unprotected this week. Now I can rant about my visit to…the vet…. My four legged friends will understand, the annual poking and prodding and the enormous needle that is unceremoniously jabbed into haunches. Usually Susan holds me and cuddles me but not this time because of this Covid thing, a stranger, not even our usual vet, came out to the car grabbed me and ran off. I thought, this is it I’ve been dognapped and I’ll never see Susan again. I expected Susan to panic and run after me but, no, she just sat in the car and watched, that deserve retaliation. Thank goodness I was safely returned.

I need comfort!

And, I’m not finished … the vet said I was too skinny, I’ve always been trim, nothing wrong there. But Susan messed with my food and I’m very picky about what I eat, so I didn’t. Two days later I get my regular chicken with kibble, I like the chicken, I’m not keen on the kibble, I save that for when I’m really hungry, which isn’t often.

A Change of Plan!

A change of plan, Miss Penny speaking. First, I want this on record that I do not approve. As everyone knows, I am the centre of attention, after all I am a princess. It seems that Susan, my boss thinks that we need to revert to the original title Susan A. Jennings Author For the Love of Story the latter being the blog. Susan says, if I want to continue hosting the blog I must talk about books, writing, reading and fun stories about all her novels especially those in progress. She (notice I don’t use Susan or boss, that’s how miffed I am) has

Don’t mess with me, I’m miffed!

condescended to give me a line or two for my antics. Huh! Antics indeed! We’ll see about that. I noticed a new pair of slippers in the hall and they look particularly chewable. I could pee on the carpet, except we don’t have a carpet, so that won’t work. I could ignore her too. But that would be harder on me than you-know-who. So …. I, as the host of For the Love of Story, shall take second place and sulk. But, a message to my loyal fans, rest assured there will be consequences. Psst! I’ll make sure my stories sneak in—stay tuned.

February is Valentine month. Susan is featuring The Lavender Cottage a women’s fiction series with a love story. Individual books or the box set of three. A delightful and cozy read about love’s heartaches and joys, this series is full of warmth and happy endings.

Covers were the topic of the week specifically The Blue Pendant. Susan was considering changing the title to Anna. However, all the five star Amazon reviews  would disappear and it is incredibly difficult to accumulate reviews, so there will be a new cover but no new title

Work in progress!

Heart of Sophie’s WarBook 2 of the Sophie Series is getting very exciting. Sophie’s life is in turmoil, the worst since she arrived at Passchendaele. Sister Sin’s watchful eye is dangerous. Andrew is called away, could this mean a court martial? Who does Sophie’s heart belong to Andrew or Carlos? Only three or four chapters left. Can Sophie challenge her demons or will they destroy her? A hint, she comes face to face with her father in the flames. As for Andrew and Carlos, only time will tell. No spoilers, just teasers for now!

Pirouetting Penny!

Pirouetting Penny, I guess you could say I pirouetted into 2021, Miss Penny speaking wishing everyone a Happy New Year. Now, for my dance explanation and rest assured I have no intention of being a circus dog. However, in the icy, snowy weather my paws hurt from the cold and the City of Ottawa spreads salt everywhere to stop people from slipping but that salt stings in my paws and I refuse to walk, pee or pooh. Susan attempts to pull me along, it doesn’t work. I don’t move but I try lifting my paws off the ground. I can get two at a time but not all four. You might think this is where the pirouette comes in but no because I’m too cold and start shivering. I win! Susan picks me up and carries me home, she carried me from Britannia Park the other day, that was a good walk, hee-hee! I had forgotten about doggie boots until New Year’s Eve, when I was plunked on the table and my paws are squeezed into these booties and this is where I learned to pirouette. I don’t want these things on, so I shake and lift my leg as high as I can and stretch it up and out and balance on two feet, that’s the pirouette. Susan laughs, really such an insult she laughs at my predicament. I get one bootie on each paw and I’m expected to walk so I pirouette. Psst! Don’t tell Susan but these booties work, no more sore feet and I turned the pirouette into a trot. No evil eye today as we took some time off over the holiday, so no writing activity to report.

Afflictions, Puppies & Anxiety

Separation anxiety is an affliction dogs get when left alone, Miss PennySpeaking. I am afflicted. Susan has left me a few times recently.  At least

Pl-e-a-s-e come home soon!

this corona thing kept her at home, but now she’s venturing out. She went to Anna at PurEnvi Spa to get a pedi, whatever that it is, something to do with feet. Perhaps, because she only has two they get worn out. Then the next day she went to deliver books to Coles Bookstore. I don’t know why I can’t come with her, but then I don’t like the car either. Yep, I’m a puppy princess. Speaking of which, I hear rumours about a new puppy. What! Susan wouldn’t dare, would she? So, I’m abandoned again, the cheek of it and she goes off to Frank and Glenda’s and that’s not all… get this… to visit Lily the new puppy. Phew, at least it’s not my house. Oh yes, and on her return she goes on about Lily being cute,

This is the adorable Lily!

adorable – adjectives reserved for me – remember me, the puppy princess? Mind you it’s better than the enormous dog they had before. He was friendly but big and played rough. After I flipped my nose back into joint, that’s a wild expression, my nose is perfectly fine, I’m quite excited Susan says I can play with Lily when she’s had all her shots. Shots! As in gunshots! I discovered she meant vaccinations at the vet. Um, poor Lily the vet is never a good thing.

Oops! That evil eye again. Susan is telling me to talk about writing, anyone would think she’d written a new book, to be truthful she’s been slacking off but I will concede that she’s been writing all this week. The Heart of Sophie’s War is progressing. May I suggest you read Prelude to Sophie’s War while you wait for the sequel – London 1915, German Zeppelin attacks are not the only thing Sophie battles at Bartley Hospital. Will her courage be enough to keep her sane and alive?

Friends in the Park Covid Style!

Friends in the park, covid style, Miss Penny speaking. Well, what an adventure I had today. Although I was miffed at first, my walk was very short this morning and I thought Susan was going out and I hate being left alone, I have separation

anxiety, but just as I was about to hide and play dead, that’s when I go all floppy and Susan can’t pick me up, ha.ha, Susan put on my leash and I’m excited but not that much as this could mean the car and I hate the car, I know I’m a princess. Except we went out the front door, psst! Don’t tell anyone, some folks in our condo building, get their knickers in a knot if dogs go through the front door, it’s kind of weird as Susan carries me. Anyway I digress, we wait by the front door and Rita pulls up in her car and we get in and I can sit on Susan’s lap, now I don’t mind this car. I don’t understand why I can’t sit on Susan’s lap when she’s driving; she says it’s

dangerous and I’m shoved in the back so a whine, very loudly. So, today I’m comfy as Rita drives us to Andrew Haydon Park where we meet more ladies, social distancing and masks at the ready and they talked, and I mean talk… a lot, and laugh very loudly. I preened with the compliments of how cute and adorable I am, which I know but I like to hear it. Then I watched the chipmunks and

squirrels, who always seem to be just out of my reach. There was one bossy Canada goose that honked too much but Canada geese are wimps, they are afraid of me and run, well sort of waddle when they see me coming and often take flight. Can you believe it, little me, an 81/2 lb Shih Tzu, can scare off those big honking birds. Oops! Just a minute, the evil eye. I’m being interrupted by the

Susan tells me that she was surprised to discover that despite the injuries, death and inhuman conditions, most of the patients and medical staff were very cheerful. Interesting!

Nine Stories High!

Nine stories high, we are on the balcony, Miss Penny speaking. That’s where Susan, my author boss, has her morning coffee while I survey the land below. I don’t drink coffee because I’m a dog… sort of. The view across the Ottawa River is

Ottawa River View

amazing. At first it’s scary, floating above tiny people and cars, it is a very, very long way down. Um, I bet it would be like flying… wheee, all the way to the… um, maybe not. I just had a vision of the SPLAT on the driveway. It is a bit

disconcerting when I spot squirrels scurrying along the wall. I get excited and I want to run after them then I remember the splat and think perhaps not. If it is very early in the morning, I hear a swooshing sound and suddenly it rains from the ground. Honestly, I’m not kidding. The rain comes up from the grass, not down from the sky. It’s not called a rain shower, although it definitely looks like one. Susan calls it a sprinkler. Does that mean a sprinkle of rain? I don’t

understand humans; they do weird things. When Susan works on the balcony, she puts my bed at her feet and I can snooze and gaze while she writes. I like that. Susan’s a bit testy at the moment, the book she was advertising isn’t doing too well, but her mood improves as she starts the new book. She is researching the human battles of The Great War, a bit gruesome for my taste, but there are romantic parts. I’m guessing the love triangle will be intriguing. Psst! Spoiler alert! Who does Sophie fall in love with? Will it be Carlos or Dr. Cuthbert? Now I’ve got you thinking. Time to sign off, Susan sends her best and Miss Penny sends love. P.S. This book doesn’t like to be advertised, perhaps it’s waiting for its mate. Psst! Buy it or borrow it now and be ready for book 2. Hot & Wet!

Scorching hot, Miss Penny speaking, I could say that about my boss, author Susan. She is writing again. The creative gene kicked in; a new historical novel is on the way Sophie in the Heart of War. Yeah! It might have something to do with her new short hair and fabulous colour, freeing up her brain. What do I know I’m just a dog? Back to scorching hot and complaining. With good reason it topped 43c yesterday. I’m glad they groomed me last week, or I’d be like this dog under the fan. Actually, I don’t like the fan much; it makes my fur tickle. I sit on Susan’s lap, but then I get hot, so I jumped down to spread out on the floor. I had no idea my body was so long. I lie down and squish my tummy to the cold floor, spread my back legs out flat and my front legs as far as they will go and rest my head in between front

legs, not back, hee-hee, that would be a bit hard—and relax. It works I’m as cool as a cucumber; I suggested Susan should try it. Um! Perhaps not, I just had an image… no, never mind! Anyway, guess what happened this morning? We went for a walk and it was raining and we got wet. I’m not sure which is worse, the heat or the rain.

The boss is giving me the evil eye, I’m supposed to give you some author news. As mentioned Prelude to Sophie’s War has a sequel in the making Sophie in the Heart of War – A griping WW1 story of the heartache, love and redemption. The rest of the week will be quiet for me as she is working on Bryan Cohen’s Amazon Ad Challenge.  All for now. Love from Susan 👩🏻‍🦳 and Miss Penny🐾.

Office Al Fresco!

Relaxing in the Summer Breeze

Office al fresco, what the heck does that mean? Miss Penny speaking, it means Susan has moved her office outside on the balcony. It’s pretty cool watching the windsurfers and sailboats on the river except when our upstairs neighbour chucks a bucket of water on their balcony, I’m not kidding it’s like a waterfall, not that I’ve ever seen a waterfall I’m repeating what Susan said, except I’ve omitted some unsavoury words. Psst! Oh yes, prim and proper Susan can swear when she gets mad, I have to cover my delicate ears. Back to al fresco. I like to peer through the hole and watch the people on the ground; they look about my size from up here. The breeze is nice and cool as it flutters through my fur. Well, actually there is no fluttering at the moment; I have matts. Not the kind you step on, but the kind that twists and knots in my furry coat. Susan tries to

I need a hair cut!

brush me but I’m naughty and won’t stay still. Well, it tickles and pulls and hurts when she gets to the matted undercoat. Do you know what she does next? She snips with the scissors; she snippety-snips through the matts—now I’m lob-sided. I look a mess and the groomer can’t see me for three weeks. If Susan keeps snip, snipping I’ll have no coat left and you know what that means. Buzzzzzzzz! That’s the sound of the electric clippers as the groomer shaves me naked. I tell you I am not looking forward to that. But for now I’ll enjoy the Office Al Fresco and watching Susan write, although she’s not doing much these days. Of course, she should be in

Susan’s mum granny Betty Celebrates 100 years June 21st. She’s amazing.

It’s not working too well and poor Granny is so disappointed. I feel so sorry for her. This bl**dy corona thing! See, even I’m swearing now. I’d hand you over to Susan, but she doesn’t have much to say. It has been a stressful week so maybe I’ll just sign off. Maybe you could just have a look or a read of one her books, she’d like that. Stay safe, everyone.

Could you survive an abusive man and raise five children alone?

This was a brave, insightful, revealing, and well written book of what must be one of the hardest experiences any person can go through. The courage and grace with which you tell this story is a truly affective reading experience…….  Judge’s commentary: Writer’s Digest

My Morning Walk!

Please come down. I want to play.

Yeah! Miss Penny speaking, I have finally hit the jackpot during our early morning walk, early because of the heat (May heatwave here in Ottawa) and boy is it hot. Can you imagine walking around in a fur coat when it’s 40c, that’s what I have to do. I’m not complaining. Psst! well, yes I am but don’t tell Susan, I don’t want her to get the idea that I like the groomers. Okay, back to the walk. So, here I am trotting along, sniffing away and then (some epic music would go well here) I see them, three of them, two grey and one black  right in front of my eyes, I couldn’t believe my luck. There they were

That’s not fair. Where are you?

walking on the path. I stopped and studied the situation and weighed up my options. Should I creep slowly towards them, give them a gentle sniff so they know I’m friendly or take them by surprise and pounce on top of them, but pouncing might scare them? I decided to lie on my tummy and creep slowly towards them, giving Susan the look of ‘don’t-you-dare-pull-my-leash’, she got the message. I smiled, yes, dogs can smile, as I crept forward and made a friendly sound in my throat. They stopped, really, they all stopped and stared at me. Now, my heart is beating a mile a minute, they’re waiting for me to say hello. And… without warning, poof, they were gone! Gone, disappeared, I couldn’t find them anywhere, not even in the tree. I do not understand squirrels! No manners! And Susan’s no help, she just says, squirrels are afraid of me. Me! Sweet princess, Miss Penny. Huh!

What’s that? Oh, what’s Susan been doing this week? That is a good question, as to be frank I have seen little writing going on. She seems to work very hard with marketing The Blue Pendant she’s working with Amazon and gathering reviews. I had no idea how important reviews are to authors; it makes an enormous difference to the book’s ranking on Amazon and when the ranking is good Amazon promotes the book. I was even more surprised when Susan told me very few readers bother to leave reviews. Amazon doesn’t allow authors to ask for reviews, they get quite snippy about it but I can ask, I’m a dog so they’d never know…hee, hee. So, if you like Susan’s books, or not, please take a minute and write a review. Maybe then Susan will help me play with the squirrels.

My Pink Baby!

I love my pink baby, Miss Penny speaking. I have no idea why it is called a baby. I’m guessing Susan gave it that name. Picture one is getting ready for bed, it always comes to bed with us and Susan teases me and hides it under the covers. She gets quite snippy if I put it on her pillow, while she gets ready for bed. I get this look, it’s supposed to chastise, I don’t pay attention. Then, she picks it up with her fingers, as though it’s going to bite or something and throws my poor baby on my pillow (yes, I have my own pillow) and says it’s dirty and smelly. It’s not smelly. It has a well-chewed aroma. There have been comments about it being washed. Now that will upset me, I might have to chew a shoe or throw-up on the bed if she does that. Oh, and you may notice my flowing coat or overflowing coat, we haven’t been to the groomers yet.

Not much going on here, we’re still isolated and this corona thing is still hovering over us. Susan had to cancel her trip to the UK for her Mum’s 100th. I know she’s sad, but psst! I’m not because I miss her when she’s gone. As far as writing is concerned nothing new, Susan is in the thinking phase. That means she has lots of ideas percolating in her head. She’s still writing the romance, but I have a feeling something big is coming. Well folks, humans and canines, that’s it for this week. Happy reading and if you have a minute, go check out the new cover for The Blue Pendant, Susan says more changes are coming.
