You may or may not know that dogs can hear a pin drop or a twittering mouse a million miles away. Miss Penny speaking. Perhaps I’m exaggerating a touch. A million miles is pushing it. But, I hear things no human can hear.
This is a fact I read on the American Kennel Club website.
What was that? Dogs can’t read.
You forget, I am an author’s assistant. Of course I can read. It might not be in the conventional way, but I manage.
OK, back to hearing. – Humans hear high-pitched sounds up to 20,000 HZ. Psst! HZ Stands for Hertz and I have no idea what they are, but it sounds good.
Now, do the math. A dog hears between 47,000 and 67,000 HZ and they hear low soft sounds no human can hear.
I always have a laugh when I hear humans say, ‘how does my dog know the car is coming long before it gets to our driveway?’. It’s not a 6th sense, although we are pretty intuitive, we hear the car coming.
This amazing hearing was essential for my ancestors when they were wild dogs hunting for rodents, listening for the little squeak in the undergrowth, or hearing danger approaching.
Really loud sounds hurt my ears. I hate the vacuum cleaner. I want to attack it and stop the noise.
Other sounds, like voices I recognize coming from Susan’s laptop I don’t understand, and I flip my head from side to side. Susan calls it Zoom, but it is disconcerting for me.
Jim and Nancy came the other day to put wheels on Susan’s foot stool. That required hamming nails and drilling holes.
Oh my goodness, Jim picked up the hammer and pounded the nails. It sounded like a sledgehammer and hurt my ears. I jumped right off the couch.
Then Jim picked up this tool he called a drill, but it looked remarkably like a gun.
When he flipped the trigger, it made this buzzing noise, it didn’t fire bullets but had a bit that twirled even faster than I twirl and screwed in the screws. The noise was interesting, not scary and I watched Jim carefully screw in the caster. Perhaps I could do that one day. Hum, maybe not.
Finally, writing is progressing. I’ve been listening to the new prequel.Susan wants to get that a finished for the bookshop release.

- Susan’s Reader News is moving to a new platform, Active Campaign, to accommodate the store front. No need to do anything. Tanya, our VA, will do all the work.
