Familiar voices telling stories from boxes is very confusing, Miss Penny speaking.
Dogs have very sensitive hearing. I don’t admit this often because I prefer to think of myself as part human, but technically I am of the canine species. I have exceptional hearing, which makes it easy for me to recognize voices from quite a distance away. Usually, after I hear a familiar voice, the person eventually appears. I get excited, run around in circles and prepare myself for cuddles.
I am exceptionally cute, so cuddles are only natural.
Recently, however, I’ve been hearing voices coming from boxes—laptops, phones and even tablets. No matter how much I fluff my fur and make myself look as adorable as possible, either nobody appears or they’re trapped inside a tiny little square on Susan’s laptop.
Apparently, this is called Zoom.
It’s full of strange people without bodies, just floating heads. They spend an alarming amount of time saying, “You’re on mute.”
What the heck is a mute? Very weird indeed.
I didn’t think things could get any more confusing, but they did.
The other day I was sitting on Susan’s knee, enjoying a cuddle while she rambled on reading her latest work. I’m supposedly listening, but honestly, after a few minutes I usually fall asleep.
Suddenly something woke me.

Susan’s voice was filling the room, but Susan wasn’t talking.
Psst! I kid you not her lips weren’t moving.
Definitely Susan’s voice. It certainly wasn’t a phone call—I’ve grown accustomed to those.
No, this was something entirely different. Her voice was coming from her laptop.
I put my head to one side, then the other, trying to figure this out, it’s not a Zoom because I see writing on the screen, not Susan in a box.
Seeing my confusion Susan explained that she recorded herself reading her stories and now she’s playing it back. Apparently, it’s practice for her next big project—creating audiobooks.
New projects—I like that idea. Maybe Susan could record me reading my book.
Hum … Maybe not. I’m not sure dog talk, barks, yips and whines would work.
All for today
