I’m in Big Trouble

After being left alone (again), Miss Penny takes matters into her own paws—with disastrous results for the office door and her dignity.

I’m in Big Trouble!

I’m in big trouble—Miss Penny speaking, your favourite and adorable canine. I thought I’d remind you of my adorableness. Susan says “adorableness” is a very big word for me… but it suits me perfectly. And today, I need all the adoring I can get.

Because I am in big trouble.

Susan is mad with me. She shouted at me yesterday. This has never happened before. I am quite crushed. Even my big soulful eyes, my cute overbite, and a very gentle paw placed on her knee did absolutely nothing. Nothing!

Now, before you jump to conclusions, it had nothing to do with writing. Susan is progressing very nicely with the latest book, The Painting and we are both much happier when she’s writing. So… what did I do that was so terrible?

It’s not my fault I was locked inside!

I scratched the paint off the door.

As you know, I’m not fussy… well, perhaps just a tiny bit. There are a few things I don’t like: car rides (I get shoved in the back), plain kibble without fresh meat, short walks, strangers—especially men—and those terribly bouncy puppies.

But the worst thing ever?

I hate being left alone.

I simply cannot get Susan to understand that I need to be with her at all times. Psst… that’s why I insist she leaves the bathroom door open. Apparently, this becomes “a problem” when we have visitors. Odd, really. My bathroom is a public park and I’m not shy at all, but humans do seem to have strange rules.

This week, I’ve been left alone a few times, and yesterday was the last straw. Especially when I heard noises. Very suspicious noises. It could have been a burglar… or even a dognapper!

Too dramatic? I think not.

So, I did what any brave and intelligent dog would do—I tried to dig my way out. You know, like when burying a bone. Scratch, scratch, scratch…

Well, it didn’t work.

Instead, the door now has a rather noticeable brown strip across the bottom, the floor is covered in white paint flakes… and I got yelled at.

Was it my fault?

Not really. It was Susan’s fault for leaving me.

She does not agree.

It took a little longer than usual… but I did eventually get cuddles.

All is (mostly) forgiven. Grr … but now I have a gate to deal with.
