I can tell, something is going on and I’m getting nervous. Miss Penny speaking, and it often means Susan is going away. But I don’t see any suitcases or the usual mad panic to do laundry.
It’s times like this that my canine senses kick in. Susan’s anxiety is rising… or it could be excitement. There have been lots of phone calls with laughs and giggles, so I think it’s a happy event. At least happy for Susan. I’m not so sure it is for me.
Psst! I’ve heard Rose’s voice a few times and they weren’t talking business. Could that mean Susan is going away and I’m staying at Rose’s place? And I heard Glenda too. She’s Lily and Lola’s mom my—not so favourite—pug cousins. Could that mean we’re going to the cottage?
I’ve also heard the names of people who don’t live here. Rick has been mentioned a lot. He’s Susan’s son who lives in London, England. The other names, Jack and Alex, I think are are Rick’s sons, but I’ve never met them.
Then I had a bone flash—the doggie version of a lightbulb moment. It means a sudden idea, just in case you didn’t get it.
Okay, not so funny. Would a squirrel flash sound better? No… maybe not.
What if Rick, Jack and Alex are coming to visit and that’s what all the planning is about? Now I’m excited! I love meeting new people, and most humans can’t resist my cute, adorable, princess charm.
I get the feeling this exciting event is imminent, so I’ll let you know what happens next week.
Weekly Writing Report
Not much going on. Susan seems to be a bit stuck. The Painting hasn’t progressed much beyond thinking and researching Scottish entails, an old-fashioned system where estates and land had to pass to the eldest male heir. It created all sorts of problems for Earls and Dukes who had no sons.
The Scottish laws governing entails—or tailzies, as they were known—were finally reformed in 1914. The timeline matters because Susan wants everything in The Painting to be historically accurate, especially when it comes to the heirs of Glenfinnan.
It’s all much too complicated for a little dog like me.
