Finicky Princess Penny, that’s me! Miss Penny speaking.
Apparently, I’m a tad picky about my food.
Psst! Picky is Susan’s word. I prefer discerning.
The vet says I’m skinny—such an insult. I prefer slender, that has a nice ring—Slender Princess Penny.
I kid you not … the vet told Susan to feed me dry kibble or one of those fancy canned dog foods packed with calories.
Err … no.
That’s for regular dogs. Nudge, nudge. Did everyone forget I’m a princess?

I’m not averse to a few delicate crunchies scattered alongside my meat, but canned dog food is absolutely out of the question. It messes with my digestion. Besides, sometimes I simply don’t feel like eating.
This sends Susan into a tizzy.
I’ve discovered that if I turn my nose up at dinner, the kitchen suddenly becomes a five-star restaurant with Susan as the slightly frazzled chef.
First, there was chicken breast. I ate that for a while, then decided I’d had enough.
Next came chicken thighs. Quite tasty, actually, until Susan ruined them by adding rice.
She said I needed carbs. What the heck are carbs?
Whatever they are, I don’t think I like them. Rice is particularly annoying because it sticks to the chicken and is very difficult to spit out.
Then Chef Susan tried ground beef with gravy.
Now we were getting somewhere.
Until she added vegetables. Little orange squares of carrot and—brace yourselves—green peas!
Psst! Fortunately, peas are much easier to spit out than rice.
Of course, every time I refuse to eat, Susan starts watching me. I mean really watching me.
“Penny, eat your dinner.”
I sniff.
“Come on, Penny.”
I walk away.
“Penny!”
Honestly, the woman is obsessed.
Then I hear those dreaded words.
“Maybe I should call the vet.”
The vet?
That means a car ride. I hate car rides. Then there’s all that poking and prodding while people discuss my weight as though I’m not even in the room.
Perhaps I should eat something.
I wander back into the kitchen and smell chicken. Lovely, plain chicken by the looks of it. Excellent. Chef Susan has finally come to her senses.
Hmm … Wait a minute. She’s taking something out of the cupboard.
It isn’t dog food. At least, I don’t think it is.
She pulls off the lid and spoons something into my dish.
Hmm.
It smells like chicken. Yummy … It looks like chicken in gravy.
I take a tentative taste.
Definitely chicken. Definitely human food.
But why did it come out of a can?
I glance up at Susan. She’s staring at me with a particularly secretive grin.
Did she trick me?
Never mind. It tastes good.
Writing News
I think Susan is still in holiday mode. She’s been in the office a few times, but there’s not much to report.
The Painting is coming along, though. There seem to be all kinds of twists and turns and I have a feeling she’s getting close to the end.
Which is probably a good thing. Once she finishes it, perhaps she can devote more time to her other important jobs like being the personal chef to Princess Penny.

P.S. I have to whisper because I think it’s a secret. I think Susan is planning the second volume of Dog with A Blog. Now that’s exciting. Check out volume one and blogs on Susan’s website
