Miss Penny’s  Birthday – Where’s My Party?

Miss Penny turns eight and is decidedly miffed when her special day appears to be passing without presents, cake or the birthday fuss a princess deserves.

Happy Birthday to Me!

🎼 🎼 🎼

Excuse me! Does anybody know what day it is?

Miss Penny speaking, and apparently today is my EIGHTH BIRTHDAY!

Yes, eight whole years of being adorable, intelligent, helpful and, quite frankly, the best literary assistant Susan could possibly have.

So, where are the balloons?

Where are the presents?

More importantly, where is the cake?

I woke up this morning expecting a little fuss. Perhaps breakfast in bed, a new toy, a few liver treats tastefully arranged on a plate. You know, nothing extravagant.

Pretty Penny
I am 8 years old today!

Instead, Susan got up as usual, made her coffee and turned on her laptop.

Her laptop!

On my birthday!

Psst! I’m beginning to think she has forgotten.

I’ve tried reminding her. I sat directly in front of her and stared. Nothing. I gave her my little woof. Nothing. I even put my paws on her leg and gave her the look.

You know the one, my big brown eyes, slightly tilted head, unbearably cute.

She scratched my ears and said, “What do you want, Penny?”

What do I want?

A BIRTHDAY PARTY!

Honestly, humans can be very slow.

Eight is quite an important age. Susan says in human years I’m somewhere in my fifties. I don’t believe that for a minute. I have no grey hair, well just a little around my chin, but I can still race around the apartment when the mood takes me and I’m certainly not middle-aged.

Psst! Susan, on the other hand…

Nope. Better not go there. I do still need someone to open the treat cupboard.

Perhaps there’s a surprise planned. Rose might arrive carrying presents. There could be chicken for dinner. Maybe Susan has hidden a new toy somewhere.

Oh! Wait a minute.

Susan just said, “Come on, birthday girl.”

Birthday girl!

She remembered!

I knew she would. I never doubted her for a minute.

Well… perhaps for a minute.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have birthday celebrations to supervise.

After all, you only turn eight once.

And when you’re a princess, birthdays are supposed to last all day.

Psst! Preferably all weekend.

Happy Birthday to me!
